New regional stadium one step closer to reality

Representative Cary Condotta, R-Wenatchee, reported a major legislative victory as his bill to finance a new regional stadium and activity venue in Wenatchee was approved by the House Finance Committee with unanimous support.

“The addition of a multipurpose stadium to Wenatchee’s new waterfront development will be great for everyone in our community,” said Condotta.

House Bill 2447 would allow local governments to hold onto a portion of sales tax revenue that is currently going to the state. These funds will be bonded to pay for the stadium.

“This new venue will expand opportunities for groups that have, in the past, been too large for our current area facilities to reconsider holding their conventions in Wenatchee,” said Condotta. “We will also be able to host larger music venues. Both will benefit our local services, hotels, restaurants and recreation areas.”

“It’s also possible our city could be an integral part of the economic boom the 2010 Olympics will bring to the Northwest,” said Condotta. “This new venue will add that extra space for new entertainment and activity options for our region of the state. It’s one way to tackle economic development in our area and keep our local businesses and services up and running.”

Condotta said he hopes this bill is swiftly passed through the House, Senate and is signed by the governor so that the project can get started. He added that the Olympics are not far off and that local businesses and hotels could use the economic lift as soon as possible.
