Grandview
student pages in Olympia
Ashlyn Sehnert-Van Pelt, an eighth grader at Grandview Middle School, paged Feb.
16-20 at the state Capitol in Olympia. She was sponsored by her 15th
District state representative,
Bruce Chandler,
R-Granger.
Sehnert-Van Pelt is the daughter of Renee and Paul Van Pelt of Grandview and Jeff Sehnert of Sunnyside. During her
week in Olympia, she stayed with a host family and attended page school
each day. She also assisted legislators on the floor of the House and
delivered documents around the campus.
In page school, Sehnert-Van Pelt proposed a mock bill addressing high school
dropout rates by creating dropout prevention programs, providing
counselors to students, and inviting guest speakers to talk about
success after high school.
"I'm glad Ashlyn had the opportunity to experience the Legislative
process," Chandler said. "Educating our students about their government
prepares them to be future leaders of our state and country."
Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the
legislative page program. Pages earn $35 for each day they serve in the
program.
Interested students must be between the ages of 14 and 16, have permission
from their school and a parent, and be sponsored by a legislator. For more information about the House
page program, visit:
