Grandview High
School student pages in Olympia
Junior Marissa Reyna
served as a page in the House of Representatives in Olympia this week.
She was sponsored by one of her representatives,
Bruce
Chandler, R-Granger.
Reyna is the daughter of Celia and Martin Reyna of Grandview. During her
week in Olympia, she stayed with a host family and attended page school
each day. She also assisted legislators on the floor of the House and
delivered documents around the campus.
Reyna said she was fascinated by the bill making process.
"They invest so much time and energy to create these bills, and
then in just two minutes they pass or fail," she said. "It
was a really good experience; I will look back on it later and be glad I
took the opportunity."
On
Thursday, Reyna proposed a mock bill in page school regarding gang
violence. Her classmates approved the measure. She said she may look
into studying to become a lawyer after high school.
Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the
legislative page program. Pages earn $35 for each day they serve in the
program.
Interested students between the ages of 14 and 16 must have permission
from their school and a parent. For more information about the House
page program, visit:
