Burlington student pages for
Rep. Barbara Bailey in Olympia
Harrison Wagoner recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives for
Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor.
Harrison, 14, is from
Burlington. An 8th-grader at Bay View Elementary, he served as a page
March 10-14.
“It was real pleasure to
sponsor Harrison as a page. He was able to experience the eleventh hour
of the legislative session – a time when so many decisions are being
made by state lawmakers. This means even more work for our pages – and
I’m sure he was pretty worn out by week’s end,” said Bailey. “Our
page programs in the House and Senate are so valuable in providing our
next generation of leaders an up-close look at Olympia and its
legislative processes. I’m always hopeful that our pages are inspired to
become politically involved and that they share their experiences with
their peers.”
Young men and women have
come to Olympia to serve as pages in the Washington State House of
Representatives for over a century. Selection to be a page is an honor,
as each House member may only sponsor two pages each session.
As a page, Harrison’s
responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to
legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House chambers
during floor sessions.
In addition to his
assigned duties, Harrison continued his regular schoolwork two hours a
day and participated in the legislative page school to learn about state
government.

Pages must be sponsored by
a legislator and obtain permission from their parents and school. Most
pages live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
