Bailey undeterred in effort to bring economic development funding to Island County
Idea to secure $80,000 for local efforts still alive in the legislative process

A bill sponsored by Rep. Barbara Bailey that could result in Island County receiving $80,000 for local economic development met resistance in the Senate on Monday. Yet the 10th District lawmaker is undeterred in her effort to push her idea through the legislative process.

Bailey’s measure, House Bill 2527, is a technical fix to legislation passed last year that inadvertently excluded Island County from receiving funding based on a definition of “rural county.” Her bill passed off the House floor unanimously on Feb. 15, but has stalled in the Senate.

“My bill had unanimous support in the House, but unfortunately met resistance in the Senate. I’m still working hard on the issue with folks in the Senate and hopeful the idea  will move through the legislative process,” said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. “I just want Island County to get the local economic development funding it deserves. This is a very  important issue for the county - especially considering the ferry challenges we've experienced.”

The 60-day legislative session is scheduled to end March 13.
