Proposed capital budget includes money for 10th District projects

Bailey says budget includes funds for Oak Harbor veteran's memorial

A preliminary capital construction budget approved Thursday in the House Capital Budget Committee contains more than $8.4 million for various local projects in the 10th District, Rep. Barbara Bailey said today.

"The statewide $4.23 billion capital construction budget provides money for public school and college projects, prisons, parks, wildlife habitat and recreation, and numerous local projects," said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. "We have worked together on this bipartisan budget to provide services and facilities for our local citizens and their families."

The largest portion ($2.5 million) of the capital budget funds for the 10th District would go to the YMCA of Snohomish County for development of Ebey Island. Last year, the Kimberly-Clark Corporation donated 788 acres of land on the island to the YMCA. Bay View State Park near Burlington would also receive $2.1 million for a wastewater treatment system.

Bailey noted a particular project of local interest in Oak Harbor.

"We're proud to offer some assistance to honor our veterans in the Oak Harbor area. The citizens in our community are seeking to build a memorial at the entrance of the new Wildcats' stadium to honor the veterans who have served and sacrificed for our freedom," said Bailey. "This budget provides an initial $50,000 to get the project under way. Oak Harbor is a military community and it is very appropriate that we honor the men and women who have served locally at the Naval Base and also recognize those who have served in other branches of the military to preserve our freedom."

Bailey said about $38,000 has been raised privately for the $100,000 Veteran's Memorial project. Supporters are hoping the memorial will be completed by the time the new Wildcats Memorial Stadium opens in September.

The budget measure, House Bill 1092, is expected to be considered Monday, March 26, by the full House of Representatives. Following that, it still needs the approval of the Senate and the governor before becoming law.
