Bailey encourages student participation in
Washington Aerospace Scholars program
Application deadline extended to Jan. 12
Rep.
Barbara Bailey is encouraging high school juniors to apply
for and become involved in a new statewide program that will allow them
to study space exploration, including a six-day residential summer
internship at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
The Washington Aerospace Scholars program is an on-line learning
experience involving high school juniors from throughout the state who
will be studying a NASA-designed curriculum. The curriculum will prepare
them for the residential internship during which they will plan a human
mission to Mars.
"This is a wonderful learning experience for students which is offered
at no cost to them. They will have an opportunity to explore
hands-on challenges and opportunities in the fields of science,
technology, engineering and math as they design a human mission to
Mars," said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to become involved in a fun and exciting adventure exploring outer
space."
Bailey and other Washington state legislators will sponsor students and
be involved in the final selection. Up to three students in each
legislative district will be chosen for the program.
Bailey noted that due to inclement weather in December, the application
deadline has been extended until Jan. 12.
"I'm hoping this extra time will offer an opportunity for more
young people
to apply to this worthwhile program. I encourage our local students to
become involved," said Bailey.
To participate, applicants must be:
- U.S. citizens;
- At least 16 years of
age;
- Washington state
residents;
-
Currently juniors in
high school;
-
Interested in math,
science, engineering or technology;
-
Able to access the
internet (from home, school or a public library); and
-
Committed to
completing online lessons to qualify for the six-day residential
summer experience.
The program is headed up by Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, retired astronaut and
current president/CEO of the Museum of Flight. During the six-day
internship, students will be guided by mentors and classroom teachers as
they participate in a mission to Mars simulation.
