House honors Navy League
through Bailey resolution
T Feb. 24, 2006 -
(Olympia) - The House of Representatives today approved a resolution
offered by
Rep. Barbara Bailey
honoring the Navy League of the United
States.
Navy League leaders, including its national president, John Panneton,
watched from the House gallery as lawmakers praised the activities of
the international organization, which Bailey said is dedicated to
"awaken interest and support in all matters aiding the Navy, Marine
Corps, Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines.
"The Navy League was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President
Theodore Roosevelt and now has nearly 70,000 members throughout the
world in 300 councils," said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. "The Navy League has
two missions. The first is to educate and inform the nation and our
leaders of the vital importance of a comprehensive and fully-prepared
sea service. The second is to provide support for active duty sea
service personnel and their families."
Bailey noted that the Navy League has also provided more than $200,000
for scholarships to young people.
"We have thousands of men and women who serve in our sea services. Many
of them are deployed overseas. They are spreading freedom and democracy
throughout the world. It is reassuring to our military personnel that
they have an organization, such as the Navy League, to support their
activities," added Bailey, who also serves as the league’s national
director and area president. "It is appropriate that we support the
organization that is behind those working to preserve our freedoms."
The measure was adopted unanimously.

Leaders of the U.S. Navy League join Rep.
Barbara Bailey at the rostrum on the floor of the House of
Representatives. They include (from left): Tom Jaffa, national vice
president; Roger Ponto, national director; Rep. Bailey; John Panneton,
