Bailey selected to attend
Western states legislative academy
Tenth District State
Rep. Barbara Bailey
has been chosen by The Council of State Governments-WEST
(CSG-WEST) as a participant in its prestigious training institute for
legislators, the Western Legislative Academy.
Admission to the academy is highly competitive and is based on
commitment to public service, desire to improve personal legislative
effectiveness and interest in improving the legislative process. Only 39
state legislators from 12 Western states were chosen as members of the
Class of 2005.
"I am very honored and excited to have been selected as one of only
three legislators from our state and the only Republican legislator from
Washington to attend this academy. This is a rare opportunity to build
upon my leadership and negotiation skills in the Legislature," said
Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. "My goal in attending this academy is to become
the most effective legislator possible in order to achieve more positive
results for the citizens I represent."
The Western Legislative
Academy will convene Nov. 15 - 18 in Colorado Springs, Colorado for
three-and-a-half days of intensive training in subjects such as the
legislative institution, ethics, team building, communications,
legislative strategies, working relationships, negotiations and time
management.
"I’m looking forward to networking with other lawmakers from throughout
the Western states, sharing our experiences with them from Washington
state, and discussing leadership strategies that will lead to better
legislation," added Bailey.
CSG-WEST is a nonpartisan,
nonprofit organization serving state legislators in 13 Western states.
The council established the academy in response to increased turnover
and loss of experienced lawmakers in many Western state legislatures in
recent years.
