Anderson appointed top
Republican on
House Higher Education Committee
Fall City lawmaker
Rep. Glenn Anderson
today announced his appointment as ranking Republican
member of the pivotal Higher Education Committee in the House of
Representatives. He also announced his assignments to the House K-12
Education Committee, the powerful House Appropriations Committee, and
its new Subcommittee on Education.
“I look forward to being a key part of forming solutions that will help
our children succeed as they become productive young adults,” said
Anderson. “Our students heading off on a career and technical education
path or to a four-year academic program today are our workforce for
tomorrow. We must do all we can to ensure that the college programs we
offer match the state and northwest regional job market. We want our
children to grow up, attend our schools and raise their own families
right here in the Northwest.”
Anderson added that he is especially pleased by his appointments to both
the K-12 Education Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on
Education, a new panel this year which will focus on education funding.
The need for a stronger K-12 curriculum and the creation of a stable
education budget in Washington are among his top priorities for the 2007
session.
“The governor had a golden opportunity to tackle education funding with
the Washington Learns Task Force this year, but instead she pushed off
this critical discussion for another time,” said Anderson. “Like last
session, I plan to advance the issue of funding education and keeping
our standards high at every turn. I just hope the leaders in Olympia
don’t cover their ears again.”
As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Anderson will
also have a role in addressing the broad range of state government
budget issues.
-
The House Higher
Education Committee takes up issues relating to the state's public
and independent baccalaureate colleges and universities, public
community and technical colleges, and private career schools. Issues
include governance and coordination of higher education, financial
aid, tuition, distance learning, and the licensing of private
colleges and career schools.
-
The House Education
Committee considers kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12)
educational policy and finance issues.
-
The House
Appropriations Committee considers the operating budget bill and
bills with fiscal impact. In addition, the committee specializes in
pension policy.
The scheduled 105-day 2007
legislative session begins Jan. 8.
