5th District lawmakers’ bill to help guide
students through school passes House

Rep. Glenn Anderson, R-Fall City, today applauded the passage of the bill he sponsored, House Bill 2423, which encourages schools in the K-12 education system to sets up comprehensive guidance and planning program for students.

“It is important to have a strong accessible system in place that counsels and guides our students through school so that they reach the goals they want to achieve,” said Anderson.

His bill directs the Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) to distribute curriculum for the program, as well as and electronic planning and performance monitoring tools. It also allows the SPI to conduct regional training seminars and allocate implementation grants to schools that to set up the student planning programs.

“As we encourage high education standards to equip our children for the global job market, guidance counseling is a key cornerstone,” said Anderson. “Students that know they want to excel in math, science or a trade occupation should know what curriculum and programs are available to them.”

Anderson’s 5th District seatmate, Rep. Jay Rodne, R-Snoqualmie, also sponsored the bill.

“More than ever our students need and should be provided guidance as they work their way through school and consider their options for the future,” said
Rodne. “This is yet another important tool for students as they enter an ever-changing workforce and economy.”

The model for this program, says Anderson, was developed in the Franklin Pierce School District in Tacoma. Students received guidance for middle and high school in a Navigation 101 course. The course creates a system for students to explore and plan for their future careers, build a portfolio and do a self-assessment of their skills, interests and abilities.

“We want all of our children to succeed in whatever career path they choose,” said Anderson. “This program is a valuable tool for our children and their parents to get the assistance they need to excel in their field of choice.
