Statement from Rep. Glenn
Anderson on
governor's WASL proposals
“Education is the
paramount duty of our state and as such we have set the academic bar
high for our students to prepare them for the ever-changing world
economy that awaits them – and rightfully so. They are competing for
jobs with their peers from other countries who are hungry for economic
opportunities. Our students must meet this challenge head on – and it
begins with their education. We must prepare tomorrow’s leaders for the
important role they will play.
“The class of 2008 represents a significant crossroads in our public
education system. Beginning with this class, students must pass three
sections – reading, writing and math – of the Washington Assessment of
Student Learning (WASL) as a requirement of high school graduation.
“While WASL scores have raised concerns, the bottom line is we cannot
lower the bar for our students simply because we don’t like the results.
To do so would be to abandon them and jeopardize our state’s future.
Instead of lowering the bar, we need to be raising accountability and
encouraging creativity to meet academic standards at all levels.
“We, as House Republicans, look forward to working with the governor and
Democrats to make sure our students have all the necessary resources in
public schools so they are prepared for the world that awaits them.
“Republicans will be presenting their proposals to address WASL testing
and remediation requirements in the coming weeks.”
State Rep. Glenn Anderson represents the 5th District serving his third
term in the Legislature. He serves as assistant ranking Republican on
both the House Education Committee and House Appropriations Committee.
