Anderson works to bring 2010
Olympics'
economic activity to Washington
Rep. Glenn Anderson,
R-Fall City, will travel to Canada next week with the aim of bringing
home some economic benefit from the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Anderson and other members
of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) executive committee
will meet in Ottawa Jan. 31 to discuss plans for the Olympics and how
Washington and other Northwest states can help, as well as benefit from
the throngs of people expected to attend the Olympics in Vancouver and
Whistler, British Columbia in the winter of 2010.
“Washington is incredibly fortunate that our neighbor to the north was
chosen to host the Olympics,” said Anderson. “People will come from all
over the world not only to see the Olympics, but also to see the region.
They’ll come to Seattle, see Eastern Washington, head to the coast and
travel up and down the I-5 corridor. And that will translate into a big
economic impact for local communities.”
The 2010 event is expected
to generate tremendous trade, investment and employment opportunities in
a number of sectors, including tourism, services, transportation and
construction. PNWER, a public-private partnership consisting of the
American states and Canadian provinces of Alaska, Alberta, British
Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and the Yukon, is examining
how the region can work together to prepare for and gain from the
Olympics.
“How much Washington
benefits from the Olympics will depend on how much work and planning we
do beforehand,” said Anderson, who serves as U.S. Vice President of
PNWER. “My colleagues and I will be working together over the next
several years to address issues related to transportation, security,
tourism and other issues to ensure things go smoothly and our
governments and businesses are ready to take advantage of this
tremendous opportunity coming our way.”
