Statement from Rep. Gary
Alexander on state revenue forecast
“The severity of our
budget situation requires immediate action. The problem has shifted from
being a large projected deficit in the next budget cycle to an actual
deficit in the current budget. It’s imperative the governor make
across-the-board reductions in state government now to ensure the
2007-09 budget does not go deeper in the hole.
“The governor must also keep her ‘no new taxes’ promise. When declining
consumer spending is resulting in less state revenue, the last thing we
should do is take more money out of the pockets of families. Taxpayers
should not be expected to bail out state government’s poor budgeting
practices.
“It’s time to take a hard look at the core functions of state government
and focus on true needs -- not wants. For the last four years the
governor and her majority party in the Legislature have been on a
spending spree -- and the party is now over. We must make
responsible, fiscally-sound decisions and I and my fellow House Republicans
look forward to being an important part of the process.”
Rep. Gary Alexander, R-Olympia, is ranking Republican on the House
Appropriations Committee.
