Statement from Rep. Gary
Alexander on House Democrat supplemental operating budget proposal
“Nonpartisan legislative
staff members are telling us the state could be facing a $2.4 billion
shortfall in the next budget cycle that starts next year – and a $5
billion shortfall in the following one. So the question must be, where
does the House supplemental operating budget leave us for the future?
The answer is clearly, worse off than before.”
The House Democrats want to spend $287 million more than in the current
budget and offer no meaningful spending reductions. Their plan spends
more, adds more in new programs and creates more trouble for the next
biennium than what the governor is proposing. It fails to come to grips
with the clear signs of a slower state economy and lower growth in
revenues. It also cuts the reserves in half.”
This is an irresponsible approach that ignores economic realities, and
I’m worried about what it will mean for families in the future.”
Rep. Gary Alexander,
R-Olympia, is ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee
