Centralia student pages for
Rep. Gary Alexander in Olympia
Thayer Lund recently
served as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives. He
was sponsored by
Rep.
Gary Alexander, R-Olympia.
Thayer, 14, is the son of
Jami and Marla Lund of Centralia. His father is an employee of the
House. A 10th-grader, Thayer served as a page January 21-25.
“This is a wonderful
program for young adults and I was pleased Thayer could be a part of
it,” said Alexander. “It is vital our young men and women become
aware of the legislative process and the page program offers them an
excellent opportunity to do so.”
Young people from across
the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State House of Representatives for over a hundred years. Selection as a
page is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor two pages each
session.
As a page, Thayer’s
responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to
legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House chambers
during floor sessions. The responsibility is considered vital to the
efficient operation of the Legislature.
In addition to assigned
duties, Thayer continued his regular school work two hours a day and
spent time in the legislative page school learning about state
government.
Pages must be sponsored by
a legislator and obtain permission from their parents and school. Most
pages live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
Students interested in
becoming pages can contact Alexander at (360) 786-7990.
