Alexander flood relief bill
will receive hearing Tuesday
Measure would provide $50 million in flood relief
Rep. Gary Alexander
is sponsoring a bill that would provide $50 million in state funds for
flood relief. The legislation would tap funding from the state’s
emergency reserve fund for the sole use of the Chehalis-Centralia flood
control project.
House Bill 3066 will receive a public hearing Tuesday in Olympia,
where members of the community and interested parties are welcome to
comment.

“Our flood-ravaged communities pulled together to help each other out –
and now it’s time for the state to step up and do its part,” said
Alexander, R-Olympia. “Representative DeBolt and I have been doing
all we can to educate state lawmakers on the devastation of our
communities. We’ve been presenting an eye-opening slide show of the
damage and sharing our personal experiences of what we saw. We are
encouraged by the response and optimistic state lawmakers will react
appropriately.”
Alexander and DeBolt held public forums in Rochester and
Adna last week to discuss long-term solutions to preventing future
flooding in the Chehalis River basin. Residents shared their concerns
and ideas for a flood mitigation plan being prepared by the state.
Alexander is reminding people that the deadline for FEMA
assistance is February 7.
Governor Gregoire declared a statewide flood emergency on December 3.
