Riverview High School student pages in Olympia

Riverview High School freshman Aaron McGaughey served as a page in the House of Representatives this week. He was sponsored by his state representative, Maureen Walsh, R-College Place.

McGaughey is the son of Terri and Stephen McGaughey of Kennewick. During his week in Olympia, he stayed with a host family. Each day, he attended page school, learned the inner workings of the Legislature, and delivered documents to legislators on the floor of the House.

McGaughey said the best part of the experience was learning how to pass a bill. During page school, he wrote his own mock bill dealing with the budget.

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Pages earn $35 for each day they serve in the program.

Interested students between the ages of 14 and 16 must have permission from their school and a parent. For more information about the House Page Program, visit: http://www.leg.wa.gov/House/Pages/HousePageProgram.aspx.
