                                                                                                                        March 27, 2009

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I'm sad to report to you this week that the legislative process has literally come to a standstill.  We've had numerous floor sessions, caucus meetings, and committee hearings cancelled.  We've done very little as we wait for the majority party to reveal their budget proposal.

This is somewhat disappointing since we had been told from the beginning to wait patiently until the March 19 revenue forecast comes out - even though we also knew things were not going to look good and should have been taking steps to address our budget shortfall.  Well, March 19 has come and gone and we've still not seen any meaningful movement on the budget front.

We were told the Senate budget (the House and Senate take turns each year going first with their budget proposals - this year, it's the Senate's turn) might come out early this week.  Then, we were told it would most likely be at the end of this week.  Now, the latest "official" information says we might see a budget early next week, although several other sources are saying we'll be lucky to see the budget by the END of next week!  Talk about herding cats!

I'll continue to update you as things develop here in Olympia.  In the meantime, I want to invite you to participate in my "Tele-Town Hall Meeting" next Thursday, April 2, from the comfort of your own home!  See below for more information.

Sincerely,

Joe Schmick
State Representative, 9th Legislative District

Upcoming 9th District Tele-Town Hall

I am looking forward to the opportunity to use some new and exciting technology to host a 9th District electronic town hall meeting on Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m.  This "Tele-Town Hall" will allow you to listen in and ask questions from the comfort of your own home!  Citizens who wish to participate should dial toll-free
1-877-229-8493 and enter pin number 14685 when prompted.

I believe it is important for citizens to connect with their representatives in the Legislature in any way possible.  I so much appreciate those of you who have been able to make it over during session.  Many of you have called my office or e-mailed me with your thoughts.  This "Tele-Town Hall" is just another way for me to stay connected with the people, values and opinions I represent in Olympia.  I encourage you to participate if you are able.  Even if you don't want to ask question you can still listen in to the interesting debate.

Global warming, cap and trade...
With global warming, greenhouse gasses and cap and trade being bantered about at the state and national level, I thought you might find the following charts interesting as they relate to greenhouse gasses.  This information was provided to me by the Franklin County PUD.  Keep these statistics in mind over the next months and years as global warming and the cap and trade debate take center stage.
