Feb.
23, 2009
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This is not my normal weekly update to you; please look
for that later on this week. Instead, there is an
issue of great importance that I feel you need to know
about, and you need to know about it now in order to
take action.
I consider the folks who receive my
e-mail updates as true Eastern Washington grassroots
activists. You may not be able to attend every
committee hearing or write a letter on every issue that
you wish, but when called upon, I know I can count on a
great majority of you to do your part.
The
governor's dreaded "cap and trade" proposals
-- both in the House and Senate -- made it through their
initial committees last week and are now in the fiscal
committees.
This is
the final stage of the process before the Rules
Committee and then a full vote on the House and Senate
floor.
I just looked up the
fiscal note for this legislation and found that the
Office of Financial Management is expecting this
legislation to cost the state over $31 million in the
2001-13 biennium and over $63 million in the 2013-15
biennium. This is just the cost to the state; it
doesn't measure the cost to businesses, families and
jobs.
I won't go over the finer details of the
cap and trade proposal in this action alert. Most
of you know what a job-killer this legislation is.
Suffice it to say, now is not the time to impose huge
financial burdens on our businesses. We'll lose
more jobs, our economy will suffer and families will be
forced to pay higher bills for energy, goods and
services, and utilities.
House Bill 1819 is scheduled for a public hearing in
the House
Committee on General Government Appropriations this
Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 1:30 p.m.
Senate Bill 5735 is scheduled for an executive
session (where it is expected to be voted out of the
policy committee and then sent to a fiscal committee) on
Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 10:00 a.m. in the
Senate Committee on Environment, Water and Energy.
I believe we need to fight this proposal every step
of the way. Please take a moment out of your day
when you can to send an e-mail or to make a phone call
to members of the committee. Just click on the
committee links above to see the members' names and
phone numbers. You can then click on the names to
be taken to their websites where you can also send an
e-mail.
Thank you for being the motivated,
responsible and active citizens that I know you to be.
It is an honor to serve you in Olympia.
Sincerely,
Joe Schmick Representative, 9th
District |
