Two Othello youth serve as
legislative pages for Rep. Joe Schmick
Justin Parker and Ben Taff participate in 2009
legislative session
Justin Parker and Ben Taff,
two Othello High School students, recently
served as legislative pages in the Washington State House of
Representatives March 29 - April 4. They were sponsored by
Rep.
Joe Schmick, R-Colfax.
Justin, 15, is the son of
Jeffrey and Frances Parker from Othello. Ben, also 15, is the son
of Timm and Lori Taff from Othello.
Justin and Ben's responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to
legislators and legislative assistants, committee meetings and House
chambers. They also spent time in the legislative page school learning
about state government.
"I've really enjoyed
having Justin and Ben with me in Olympia this past week to serve as legislative pages," said
Schmick. "All
of the pages I've sponsored have done an outstanding
job representing the 9th District. I know it's not always easy
being so far from home and having to walk around the halls of Olympia,
but they've done everyone back home proud. Justin and Ben did a great job
and it was a pleasure having them in Olympia."
Young men
and women have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State Legislature since 1891. Pages must obtain permission from their
parents and schools, and many stay with volunteer host
families in Thurston County.
The 105-day 2009 legislative session is scheduled to end April 26.
