Issaquah student serves as
legislative page for Rep. Jay Rodne
Elliot Lawrence participates in third week of 2009
legislative session
Elliot Lawrence recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives Jan. 26-30. He was sponsored by
Rep. Jay
Rodne.
Elliot, 15, is the son of Doug and Ramona
Lawrence of Issaquah. He is a 9th-grade student at
Pacific Cascade Freshman
Campus.
Elliot’s responsibilities included delivering
messages and documents to legislators and legislative assistants,
committee meetings and House chambers. He also spent time in the
legislative page school learning about state government.
“Our
pages work very hard each week and Elliot was a great example of this. I
really appreciate his efforts and hope he enjoyed his time in Olympia,”
said Rodne, R-North Bend. “I think more and more young
people are becoming interested in government. And this is important. Our
youth need to know that someday in the near future they will not only be
voting, but possibly running for office themselves.”
Young men
and women have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State Legislature since 1891. Pages must obtain permission from their
parents and schools, and many choose to stay with volunteer host
families. State representatives may only sponsor a limited number of
pages each session.
