McCune hosts five legislative pages in state House

Rep. Jim McCune, R-Graham, hosted five students as legislative pages in the Washington State House of Representatives over the last three weeks. Bethany and Micah Atwood and Cynthia Bruner served Feb. 9-13, and Joshua Boonstra and Grace Nagy served Feb. 16-20.

The students' responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to legislators and legislative assistants, committee meetings and House chambers. They also spent time in the legislative page school learning about state government.

Bethany and Micah are the children of Dan and Melody Atwood of Spanaway. Both are home-school students and in the 8th and 10th grades, respectively. Bethany enjoyed walking around the Capitol and meeting other students. She likes music, band and playing the clarinet. History is her favorite subject. Micah enjoyed learning about how the Legislature works and the architecture of the Capitol. He likes drawing, writing poems and playing the saxophone and piano. Science is his favorite subject.

Cynthia is the daughter of Lloyd and Melissa Bruner of Yelm. She is in 8th grade at Eagle View Christian School. Cynthia enjoyed running up and down the Capitol steps delivering envelopes, and learning about how bills are written in page school. She likes volleyball, riding horses and animals. Math is her favorite subject.

Joshua is the son of Roxanne Boonstra of Puyallup. He is a home-school student and is in the 10th grade. Joshua enjoyed delivering messages on the House floor and learning more about the process of passing bills. He likes ultimate Frisbee, long-boarding and Bible study with his youth group. Science is his favorite subject.

Grace is the daughter of Rick and Lil Nagy of Graham. She is a home-school student and is in the 9th grade. Grace enjoyed learning about legislation in page school, including the amount of time it takes for a bill to pass. She likes showing horses for 4-H and the history of Christianity.

Young men and women have come to Olympia since 1891 to serve as pages for the Washington State Legislature. Pages must obtain permission from their parents and schools, and most live with volunteer host families while in Olympia. State representatives may only sponsor a limited number of pages each session.
