Rep. Doug Ericksen's
statement on today's state revenue forecast
"Now is the time for
leadership and real solutions. Never before has our state needed
leadership and a vision for its budget more. The problem is clear, the
numbers show what needs to be done and it's time to put solutions on the
table.
"I have
a clear vision for the budget. First, we do not need to
raise taxes on hard-working families or employers. Our state, despite its economic
struggles, will still have more tax dollars to use in the next
budget cycle compared to the current one. This fact is often lost in the
debate.
"Second, our state must restructure its programs
and services, and focus on the priorities of education, public safety and
protection of its most vulnerable. It's time to separate wants from
needs, and live within our means -- just like families are doing.
"Finally, our state must change its budgeting process to ensure
the problems of today are not repeated. For example, our state should
implement an enforceable spending limit, prevent unsustainable budgets
from being passed by the Legislature and put extraordinary tax
collections aside in good economic times. These are just three of eight
proposals House Republicans have put forward to improve the budget
process."
