Marta Nelson recently served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of Representatives March 30 - April 3. She was sponsored by Rep. Larry Crouse, R-Spokane Valley. Marta, 16, is the daughter of Carol Nelson of Spokane Valley. She is a student at Northwest Christian Schools. Marta's responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to legislators and legislative assistants, committee meetings and House chambers. She also spent time in the legislative page school learning about state government. "The legislative page program is a great opportunity that gives students first-hand experience about how their government operates," said Crouse. "We ask a lot of our pages each week and I appreciate Marta's time and efforts. It's not easy navigating the capital campus and being away from home. She did a great job and it was a pleasure having her in Olympia." Young men and women have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington State Legislature since 1891. Pages must obtain permission from their parents and schools, and many stay with volunteer host families in Thurston County. Rep. Crouse can be contacted at (360) 786-7820 or crouse.larry@leg.wa.gov.
