Statement from Rep. Barbara
Bailey on today's revenue forecast
10th District lawmaker is assistant ranking
Republican on House Ways and Means Committee
"It comes as no surprise
that the revenue forecast reveals our budget situation has gone from bad
to worse. While a sagging state economy has played a role,
out-of-control state spending the last four years has caught up to
Washington in a very serious way.
"Never before has it been more
important for the Legislature to commit to a prioritized and more
efficient state government. While limiting the size and scope of state
government is never an easy process, it is vital in today's economy.
Voters elect state lawmakers to solve problems. As assistant ranking
Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, I look forward to
working with my colleagues in putting forth solutions to this crisis.
"Part of the solution is taking tax increases off the table. In
newspaper articles today, leading Democrats in the state House and
Senate signaled that tax increase options are likely, though they were
not specific in what areas. State government must live within its means
and be responsible and accountable. This is not the time to put the
burden of more taxes on the hard-working families of our state."
