When I retired from the House in 2007, it
never occurred to me that I would have the honor of serving again.
However, when Rep. Hailey made the decision to step down, he and others
asked if I would consider a return to the legislative arena. The
decision was made easier for me because I have such great respect and
admiration for Steve, who served our district with principled integrity.
His passing saddened us all, but I am firmly committed to upholding the
9th District team’s reputation for reliable representation.
When I arrived in Olympia Jan. 21, the
session was already underway, but I made it a top priority to seek
committee assignments that would allow me a voice in crafting education
policy. Our caucus leadership and the speaker were able to accommodate
my requests, and I was appointed to both the House Education Committee
and the Education Appropriations Committee.
The struggling economy and the budget crisis
have taken center stage this year, but there are many other critical
issues before us, and I am glad to have the opportunity to work on the
serious challenges facing the Legislature and our state.
Thank you for taking time to visit my Web
site. If you have questions, comments or ideas to share with me, please
call, send an e-mail or write a letter. I am always glad to hear from
you, and encourage you to keep in touch.
