and economic development committee
Lt. Gov. Brad Owen
welcomes 10th District state lawmaker to the group
Rep.
Barbara Bailey has been appointed to the Lieutenant
Governor's
Legislative
Committee on Economic Development and International Relations. The
committee, which studies and reviews state economic development issues,
will meet Wednesday, Sept. 2 in Seattle.
Bailey,
R-Oak Harbor, said she's looking forward to working with the committee
to advance international
relations and increase economic opportunities for Washington.
"I'm really excited about this
prestigious committee assignment and what it could
mean for the people of the 10th Legislative District. In these tough
times, never before has international relations and economic development
been more important," said
Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. "I'm excited about being part of a team that
works with the international community and recommends economic solutions
to the Legislature."
The committee's duties include an emphasis on international
trade, tourism, investment and industrial development, and assisting the
Legislature in developing a comprehensive and consistent economic
development policy.
During
Wednesday's meeting, Bailey said the committee will discuss Washington's
role in the global health care industry.
"As a leader on the issue
of health care in the Legislature, I'm looking forward to this
discussion. I'm proud Washington has long been at the forefront of
developing technologies that have advanced health care and medicine
around the world. The global health sector is an important part of our
state's economy, creating and supporting 43,000 jobs and generating more
than 1.7 billion dollars in salaries, wages, and benefits annually,"
added Bailey. "We need to continue fostering the growth of health
research and development in Washington state." "We are very pleased to have
Representative Bailey join our committee and will welcome her
contributions," said Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, committee chair.
"We have already worked together on issues of trade and economic
development and I know she will be a key resource for LCEDIR. The topics
we address are vital to the citizens of the 10th Legislative District as
well as to the whole state."
