Governor signs Bailey's bill
to give counties more flexibility with their pay periods
10th District state lawmaker works with
Island County auditor
A bill prime sponsored by
Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, was
signed into law by Governor Chris
Gregoire Tuesday.
House Bill 1461 will allow counties to adopt a weekly pay
period for county officers and employees. It will also allow a county
using a semimonthly pay period to adopt a biweekly pay period and make
payments not later than 13 days after the end of each pay period.
"This bill will give smaller counties more flexibility and
control with their pay periods, and will help many jurisdictions around
our state," said Bailey. "I appreciate the support of
my legislative colleagues, and thank Governor Gregoire for signing the bill into law."
Bailey
testified for her bill in front of the House Local Government and
Housing Committee on Feb. 4. The 10th District lawmaker explained that
the idea for the legislation was brought to her by the Island County
auditor.
"We are very pleased with the legislative work
accomplished by Representative Bailey, who has worked tirelessly on
behalf of small counties to ensure passage of House Bill 1461," said
Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider. "We are most
appreciative to Representative Bailey and her colleagues in the House
and Senate for their efforts on behalf of Island and other counties who
will benefit from her bill."
