Bailey legislation to give counties more flexibility
with pay periods passes House, now in Senate
Bipartisan measure based on request from Island County
Legislation that would give
counties more flexibility with their pay periods passed the House
unanimously Monday.
House Bill 1461, sponsored by
Rep.
Barbara Bailey, would allow counties to adopt a biweekly pay
period for county officers and employees. It would also allow a county
using a semi-monthly pay period to adopt a biweekly pay period and make
payments not later than 13 days after the end of each pay period.
"This bill is about allowing for local control and more flexibility
for smaller counties. I think it could help many jurisdictions around
our state," said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. "To pass the
House is an important hurdle, and I am working with my
colleagues in the Senate to ensure the bill moves forward."
The
10th
District lawmaker testified for her bill in front of the House Local Government and
Housing Committee on Feb. 4. She explained to the committee that the
idea was brought to her by the
Island County
Auditor.
"I appreciate the auditor from Island County
bringing this issue to my attention," said Bailey. "This
is a good example of
how different levels of government can work together for the common good."
House Bill 1461 has been to referred to the Senate
Government Operations and Elections Committee.
