Statement from Rep. Barbara
Bailey on the Washington Economic Development Commission's strategic
plan released today
At a
news conference in Olympia today, the
Washington Economic Development Commission unveiled its strategic plan to help guide
Washington as it develops a stronger, 21st century economy.
Rep.
Barbara Bailey,
a member of the commission, spoke at the news conference and also
released the following statement:
"I would like to thank
the governor, Chair Bruce Kendall and my fellow members of the
Washington Economic Development Commission. When we started this effort
a year and a half ago, no one knew we would be facing the economic
challenges we are today. This effort went from being an important one to an
absolutely vital one for the future of our state economy.
"In these uncertain times of higher unemployment and talk of stimulus
plans, the public is turning to all levels of government for solid plans
and assurances for the future. What we are unveiling today is that solid
plan – and that assurance for our citizens.
"It is one
thing to have a plan, and another thing to execute it. Now is the time
to make good on our promises, and hold ourselves accountable. I see
today not as an ending point but, rather, a starting point. And that’s
the
beginning of a new economic strategy for prosperity in our state."
The
Washington
Economic Development Commission was charged with the creation of a
comprehensive statewide economic development strategic plan to guide the
operation of the state's economic development programs, infrastructure,
workforce training, small business assistance, technology transfer, and
export assistance.
