Bailey testifies for her
bill to give counties more flexibility on pay periods
Bipartisan measure is in response to Island County
concerns
Rep.
Barbara Bailey recently
testified for a bipartisan measure she
is sponsoring that would allow counties more flexibility in how they
handle their pay periods.
House Bill 1461 would authorize all county legislative
authorities to establish a weekly pay period for county officers and
employees.
"Right now some counties do not have the authority to
establish a weekly pay period for their officers and employees. My bill
offers all counties this option," said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor.
"This legislation is about offering local control and allowing small
counties flexibility. If passed, it could help many jurisdictions around
our state."
The
10th
District state lawmaker explained to the House Local Government and
Housing Committee Wednesday that the concept was brought to her by the
Island County
auditor last year. However, it was too late in the 2008 legislative session
for the concept to be considered.
"This is a great example of
how the best ideas come from the people in our communities - not Olympia
insiders," said Bailey. "It also shows
how different levels of government can work together for the common
good."
