Burlington youth serves as
legislative page for Rep. Barbara Bailey
Adam Kirkby participates in third week of 2009
legislative session
Adam Kirkby recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives Jan. 26-30. He was sponsored by
Rep. Barbara
Bailey.
Adam, 15, is the son of Mark Kirkby of
Burlington. He is a sophomore at
Burlington-Edison High School.
Adam’s responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to
legislators and legislative assistants, committee meetings and House
chambers. He also spent time in the legislative page school learning
about state government.
“We ask a lot of our pages each week and
I appreciate Adam’s time and efforts. It’s not easy navigating the
capital campus and being away from home,” said Bailey, R-Oak
Harbor. “I hope our young men and women continue to be more and
more involved in all levels of government. In short time, they will not
only be voting but running for office themselves.”
Young men
and women have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State Legislature since 1891. Pages must obtain permission from their
parents and schools, and many stay with volunteer host
families in Thurston County.
