Stanwood High School student pages for Rep. Bailey in Olympia
Nicolas Jensen gets to see ceremonies, House floor action in first week of 2009 legislative session

Nicolas Jensen recently served as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor.

Nicolas, 14, is the son of Shane and Norisah Jensen of Camano Island. A 9th-grader at Stanwood High School, he served as a page from Jan. 12-16.

“I really enjoyed sponsoring Nicolas as a page. He is a delightful young man with a bright future,” said Bailey. “Nicolas got to page at a really special time at the state Capitol – the opening week of the 2009 legislative session. He was able to witness, first hand, a lot of the ceremonies, speeches and other House floor action this week. I hope he found this not only a fun, but educational, experience.”

Nicolas also participated in Bailey’s video-taped, weekly update from the House floor that goes to Mount Vernon TV (channel 10) and Skagit Government TV (channel 21). Nicolas, who is involved in theater, was undaunted by being on camera.

Young men and women from across the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington State Legislature since 1891. House members may only sponsor a limited number of pages each session. Pages must obtain permission from their parents and schools, and most live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.

As a page, Nicolas’ responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House chambers. In addition to assigned duties, he continued his regular schoolwork and spent time in the legislative page school learning about state government.

Students interested in becoming pages can contact Bailey directly at (360) 786-7914 or bailey.barbara@leg.wa.gov.
