La Conner High School student
pages for Rep. Barbara Bailey in Olympia
Ben Mesman, a 10th grader
at La Conner High School, recently served as a legislative page in the
Washington State House of Representatives for
Rep. Barbara Bailey.
“Sponsoring Ben was an
absolute pleasure for me this session,” said Bailey, R-Oak
Harbor. “Ben is a shining example of what is best about the youth
from our district. His motivation and outstanding service this week is a
direct reflection and credit to his family and our community.”
Ben, age 16, is the son of
Alan and Vickie Mesman of Mount Vernon.
Young people from across
the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State House of Representatives for over a century. Selection as a page
is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor two pages each
session.
As a page, Ben’s duties
included delivering messages and bills to lawmakers’ offices and to the
House floor. He also spent time in Legislative Page School learning
about state government. In addition to assigned duties, Ben continued
his regular schoolwork two hours a day.
Pages must be sponsored by
a legislator and obtain permission from their parents and school. Most
pages live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
