Mount Vernon student pages
for Rep. Barbara Bailey at state Capitol
Cody Patrick recently
served as a legislative page in the Washington State House of
Representatives. He was sponsored by
Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak
Harbor.
Cody, 14, is the son of
Janet and Richard Patrick of Mount Vernon. His father is deputy
treasurer at the Washington State’s Treasurer’s Office. An 8th-grader,
Cody served as a page January 13-18.
"Sponsoring Cody was definitely a bright spot for me so far this
legislative session," said Rep. Bailey. "I believe it’s important
that young men and women become engaged with our legislative processes,
and that they take the time to share their experiences with others. The
current generation of young adults will soon be our leaders of tomorrow,
and I believe it is vital for them to see first-hand that they can truly
make a difference."
Young people from across
the state have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the Washington
State House of Representatives for over a hundred years. Selection as a
page is an honor, as each House member may only sponsor two pages each
session.
As a page, Cody’s
responsibilities included delivering messages and documents to
legislators in their offices, committee meetings and House chambers
during floor sessions. The responsibility is considered vital to the
efficient operation of the Legislature.
In addition to assigned
duties, Cody continued his regular schoolwork two hours a day and spent
time in the legislative page school learning about state government.
Pages must be sponsored by
a legislator and obtain permission from their parents and school. Most
pages live with volunteer host families while in Olympia.
Students interested in
becoming pages can contact Rep. Bailey directly at (360) 786-7914.
