April 7, 2008

Dear friends and neighbors,

It's budget time in Olympia. Proposals have now been released in the House and Senate for the three main budgets: operating, capital and transportation.

The operating budget pays for the general operations of the state, including K-12 and higher education, health and human services, natural resources, public safety and other functions of state government. The capital budget is what we call the "bricks and mortar" budget. It appropriates money for the construction and repair of public buildings and for other long-term investments, such as land acquisitions and transfers. Finally, the transportation budget pays for our highways, bridges, ferries, the Washington State Patrol and the Department of Licensing.

Our state budgets run in two-year cycles which end June 30 of each odd-numbered year. By July 1 of this year, the new budgets approved by the Legislature will go into effect.

We have three weeks to reach agreement on each of the budgets. The 105-day legislative session is scheduled to end Sunday, April 26.

In this e-newsletter update, I'm providing a list of projects included in the proposed House capital budget for the 12th Legislative District. Keep in mind this is a preliminary list -- not yet finalized -- but I suspect the final version will look very similar to this one.

As taxpayers, you pay a lot of money to government. In this capital budget proposal, we're bringing your money back to the local community in the form of parks, trails, school buildings, repairs to existing public buildings, and other projects that enhance the quality of life we enjoy in the 12th District.

I welcome your comments/questions on these and other legislative issues.

Please feel free to share this e-newsletter with your friends and family. If any of them would like to receive regular e-newsletter updates from my office, have them go to this link and sign up: Click here.
