Yelm student serves as page
in Legislature
Photo Release
Grace McDonough, Yelm
Middle School student, recently served as a page in the Washington State
House of Representatives. Grace was sponsored during her week in
Olympia by
Rep.
Gary Alexander, R-Olympia.
As a page, Grace was responsible for delivering messages and documents
to legislators in their offices, committee hearings and the House
chambers during floor sessions. In addition to her assigned duties, she
also continued her regular studies for two hours a day and attended page
school, where she learned about state government.
"The page program offers young people an excellent opportunity to get a
close-up view of the legislative process and to see how state government
works," said Alexander. "Grace put in some long hours,
but she went about her tasks conscientiously and cheerfully. It was a
pleasure to be her sponsor."
Young men and women have come to Olympia to serve as pages for the
Washington State Legislature since 1891. Pages must obtain permission
from their parents and schools, and many stay with volunteer families in
Thurston County.
