Rep. Gary Alexander comments
on the majority party's press conference on SB 5460
Rep.
Gary Alexander, R-Olympia, released the following statement today
regarding the majority party's press conference on Senate Bill 5460:
"I
am pleased the majority party is ready to take some initial, small steps
in the right direction. This sends the right message to state agencies,
and that's good.
However, early
implementation of a supplemental budget for the remainder of the 2007-09
biennium is something my counterpart in the Senate Republican Caucus,
Sen. Joe Zarelli, and I have been urging for some time. The longer we
wait to pass a meaningful supplemental budget that includes ongoing
policy changes, the less impact the supplemental budget can have.
We are looking at
all the components of the 2009-11 operating budget to come up with a
list that looks beyond the governor's targeted cuts. Hopefully, we'll be
in a position to move a more responsible budget soon.
On a side note, I
heard Rep. Kessler comment that she wished Republicans were in charge so
that we would have to solve this mess by ourselves. To that, I would
say: 'Rep. Kessler, had Republicans been in charge four years ago, we
wouldn’t be in this mess to begin with.'"
